YOU KNOW WHERE REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS RESIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
There
are currently (June, 2011) 145 individuals registered as sex offenders with the MI State Police residing in Crawford and Roscommon
Counties. 53 of them live in Crawford; 92 live in Roscommon. This is a decrease of +3 offenders
in Crawford County and +2 in Roscommon County since our last review of the State Police data in June,
2011.
While society typically thinks of sex offenders as being male, it is important to note that within our 2
counties, a total of 3% of the registered sex offenders are women.
In Roscommon County, the highest percentage reside in Houghton Lake at
35%. This is followed by the Village of Roscommon with 27%; Prudenville with 20% and St. Helen with 18%.

- Experts estimate 4
children die every day as a result of child abuse and 3 out of 4 of them are under the age of 4.
- A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds.
- Of reported rapes of children aged 12 and under, 90% of them know the
perpetrator.
- 36.7%
of all women and 14.4% of all men in prison in the United States were abused as children.
- Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely to abuse
alcohol and 3.8 times more likely to become addicted to drugs.
- Most child victims never report their abuse.
- One-third
of all abused and/or neglected children will grow up to repeat the same cycle with their own children.
- It
is also likely that you know an abuser. The greatest risk to children doesn’t come from strangers, but from friends
and family.

What are the signs of abuse?

Physical
Neglect - Physical Indicators - Unattended medical
needs.
- Lack of supervision.
- Regular signs
of hunger, inappropriate dress, poor hygiene.
- Distended stomach,
emaciated.
- Significant weight change.
Physical Neglect - Behavioral Indicators - Regularly
displays fatigue or listlessness, falls asleep in class.
- Steals/hoards
food, begs from classmates.
- Reports that no caretaker is at home.
Physical
Abuse - Physical Indicators
- Unexplained bruises (in various stages of healing), welts, loop marks.
- Adult/human bite marks.
- Bald
spots or missing clumps of hair.
- Unexplained burns/scalds.
- Unexplained fractures, skin lacerations/punctures or abrasions.
- Swollen
lips/chipped teeth.
- Linear/parallel marks on cheeks and temple area.
- Crescent-shaped bruising.
- Puncture
wounds.
- Bruising behind the ears.
Physical Abuse
- Behavioral Indicators
- Self-destructive/self-mutilation.
- Withdrawn
and/or aggressive-behavior extremes.
- Uncomfortable/skittish with physical
contact.
- Arrives at school late or stays late as if afraid to be at home.
- Chronic runaway (adolescents).
- Complains
of soreness or moves uncomfortably.
- Wears clothing inappropriate to
weather, to cover body.
- Lack of impulse control (e.g. inappropriate outbursts).
Sexual Abuse - Physical indicators - Pain
or itching in genital area.
- Bruises or bleeding in genital area.
- Sexually transmitted disease.
- Frequent
urinary or yeast infections.
- Extreme or sudden weight change.
- Pregnancy under 12 years of age.
Sexual Abuse - Behavioral Indicators - Withdrawal,
chronic depression.
- Sexual behaviors or references that are unusual
for the child's age.
- Seductive or promiscuous behavior.
- Poor self-esteem, self-devaluation, lack of confidence.
- Suicide
attempts (especially adolescents).
- Hysteria, lack of emotional control.

Who Should Report Child Abuse/Neglect?
Each and every one of us should understand our obligation to report
any suspected child abuse/neglect that we believe to be happening to a child. Your call to Children's Protective
Services is anonymous -- you don't have to give any information that identifies who you are.
There are
"MANDATED REPORTERS". These are people who, based on Michigan law, are required to report any suspected incident
of child abuse/neglect. These include:

- Medical Examiner
- Nurse
- Person licensed to provide emergency medical care
- Audiologist
- Psychologist
- Marriage and Family Therapist
